Originally incorporated as an Indiana town in 1865, it became an incorporated city in 1963. Today, New Haven has approximately 15,000 inhabitants and is the corporate home of Do It Best hardware stores and Central States Grain. Fort Wayne and Woodburn are located only a few miles away.

Among its amenities, New Haven offers many parks & recreation centers, and with the City of Fort Wayne it owns and maintains the Rivergreenway Trail which is now included in the American Trail web site and considered a National Recreation Trail.

New Haven is served by the East Allen County School District (EACS) which has its headquarters in the city. New Haven is also served by several parochial schools.
